Yadina Indira Morales, a Maryland mom who was breastfeeding her baby while highly intoxicated, has been charged with manslaughter after the infant died.
Officials say Morales was both breastfeeding and "highly intoxicated," which led to her two-month-old being found unresponsive, unable to be revived.
The alcohol in her system was only part of the story here. Cops say Morales passed out while breastfeeding and that the baby was found underneath her.
She's since been charged with manslaughter, second-degree child abuse, reckless endangerment, and other lesser charges as a result of her actions.
This was not her first involvement with the law, either.
Last year, a man Morales identified as her boyfriend was charged with child abuse after another child, Morales' then two-year-old girl, was hospitalized.
Maryland online judicial records indicate that the man, Daniel Keith Edmonds, ultimately registered a plea to a lesser, second-degree assault charge.
In the current case, drinking when you're a mom is not a crime, but clearly if you drink to the point where you can't function, you can commit a crime.
Unknowingly or unwittingly? Perhaps. But if you're impaired, you can still be held responsible. This should be a cautionary tale for all to take note of.
Breastfeeding is important, but the baby's safety is more so. Time to pump and dump, or go the formula route. Or get a sitter, or lay off the booze.
Seriously. There's got to be a way to prevent this.
