NASCAR Crash: 28 Injured in Pre-Daytona Pile-Up Feb 24th 2013, 03:54 A huge, multi-car crash on the final lap of Saturday's Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway injured 28 fans, many very seriously. At least one NASCAR fan suffered life-threatening head trauma. NASCAR Crash at Daytona Tires and parts flew into the crowd after the crash; 14 of those injured were treated on site and 14 others were transferred off-site to seek medical attention. As CNN reports, shredded debris flew into the racetrack barrier and beyond, with some reaching 20 feet up to the second level of the track's stands. Halifax Medical Center reports that one adult underwent surgery for life-threatening head trauma, while a 14-year-old is in critical, but not life-threatening condition. Kyle Larson, the driver of the car torn to pieces, was not hurt. The Daytona 500, the first and biggest event of the NASCAR racing season, takes place at the same track Sunday. It's a dangerous sport ... for drivers and spectators.

Mischa Barton Accused of Stiffing Sober Coaches Feb 23rd 2013, 11:30 Mischa Barton is refusing to pay a team of sober coaches who claim the troubled actress racked up a huge bill for using their services back in 2009. She was ordered to pay $95,000 (!) to Doctors' Choice Nursing in 2011. Barton did not show up to answer the suit, so a default judgment was reached. The nature of the services has been a mystery, until this week in court, when the owner of DCN explained that the nurses were hired to keep Mischa sober. The owner did not specify which substance Mischa was abusing. Mischa's lawyer was in court Thursday fighting the default judgment and grilled the owner of DCN about why she hadn't notified Mischa of the mounting bill. DCN replied that it didn't want the stress of the mounting bill to exacerbate Mischa's sobriety issues, which have been an ongoing factor since The OC. The owner said it was their job to keep her sober before an important acting gig in 2009, when she starred on the CW's short-lived The Beautiful Life. Mischa's lawyer contends it was the actress' mother who hired the nurses and should therefore have to pay, not Mischa. A judge has yet to rule in the case.

El Chapo Guzman: Dead … or Not! Feb 23rd 2013, 12:21 Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was dead Thursday. Now he's not. The Mexican drug boss apparently is alive and well, and probably laughing at thousands of Twitter users and even government officials who reported otherwise. He was never really dead, or even in peril, but the rumors of his demise started slowly on Thursday thanks to journalists in Guatemala and Mexico. An email exchange about an incident in the remote jungle region of El Peten that might have involved El Chapo began to permeate diplomatic circles. The Interior Minister of Guatemala told journalists that a firefight between drug dealers and military personnel had resulted in the death of two suspected criminals. "There was a clash between Guatemalan security forces in (the town of) San Francisco," Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez said Thursday, adding, erroneously: "Two died. One of the deceased is physically very similar to El Chapo." Cue the Twitter reports of El Chapo's death, spreading like wildfire. Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre said at that point of the night, the government was getting ready to conduct forensics tests to identify the two corpses. Yet later on the same night, Guatemalan officials said they weren't even sure that the supposed gunfight against the drug dealers had even occurred. Officials also said that military units were patrolling the area to see if they could find any signs of a gun battle between the army and drug traffickers. They did not. On Monday morning, after no El Chapo had been found, Lopez apologized for the government's blunder on local radio station Emisoras Unidas. He said confusion arose because of over-reliance on testimonies of local villagers, who said that they had seen a clash between the army and drug traffickers. He said that too many "contradictory" pieces of information came to officials at once, but Ioan Grillo, a journalist and drug war analyst, had another theory: "My reading of Chapo Guzman drama: a snitch called up and said Chapo died in firefight," Grillo tweeted. "Guatemala pleased with news tells before confirming." Whatever happened, with regards to this most recent case, there is some reason to believe that El Chapo Guzman is in Guatemala at this time. WikiLeaks suggests that El Chapo is hiding in El Peten, where Mexican cartels have managed to gain a stronghold over drug trafficking routes. Previously officials from the U.S. DEA have suggested that El Chapo hides in a mountain range in western Mexico, that straddles the states of Durango and Sinaloa.
