Dance Moms Season 5 Episode 23 pitted sibling prodigies Maddie and Mackenzie Ziegler against each other in a battle for the ages on Lifetime.
Who would prevail, and what would the fallout be?
When Dance Moms Season 5 Episode 23 got underway, the two girls were given solos in the same age category, raising the stakes higher than ever.
Sibling rivalry plus typical Dance Moms pressure cooker? In. Tense.
The pressure was even higher for Maddie, considering that in addition to practicing her risky tap dance solo, she had a new video with Sia premiering.
Abby, for her part, brought in celebrity guest choreographer Travis Payne to teach a routine inspired by vouging, a style the girls aren't familiar with.
Did they catch on quickly enough? And who came out on top?
If you watch Dance Moms online, you know all too well that the moms tend to lose their minds when it comes to this stuff. This week was no exception.
Mackenzie, 10, won for her jazz/acro routine. Maddie, 12, took second for her tap routine. Their mom, Melissa Gisoni, wept as she embraced the former.
Maddie was gracious on stage, but behind the scenes, she was less than thrilled with her mom. Maddie summed it up thusly to her parental unit:
"Mom, it's just a stupid competition ... you don't have to cry."
Stupid competition? Yes, but she feels she should've won it.
"I definitely deserve to beat her, but its OK," Maddie said.
Later, in the dressing room, Melissa attempted to get Maddie to share in her epic joy for Mackenzie, but the older sister was just not having it.
"I'm not mad at all!" Maddie said to her mom at that point. "You said, 'Be happy. Be happy. I'm like, I'm happy! … I AM happy. Just stop it!"
The mom had a different assessment after the fact, in any case, when she was asked by Jessalyn Siwa if she felt Maddie deserved to win.
"I'm sorry. Mackenzie looked like a 7-year-old on the stage and she looked adorable and sweet and Maddie was fabulous," Melissa said.
Mixed signals much?
