Aaron Hernandez will remain in solitary confinement at the Bristol County (Mass.) Jail as he awaits trial on murder charges, which could be a long ways off.
Officials said it would be in his "best interest" to stay isolated from the general prison population, despite concerns from the ACLU about his condition.
The former New England Patriots star and alleged murderer was placed in solitary right after he was booked for plotting the execution of Odin Lloyd.
Fearing violent inmates might view the former NFL player as a "prize," officials have declined to move him out of solitary, saying it just isn't prudent.
They reiterate that given the high-profile nature of his case, it's in his "best interest" to stay cut off, and he is "doing well" behind bars ... no issues so far.
As far as visitors go, Hernandez "has been getting visitors regularly," officials say, though they declined to say who was coming and going from the jail.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, but police say they have a substantial amount of evidence linking him to the former semi-pro player's slaying.
They believe he had the means and opportunity to do so, blatantly tried to cover up evidence afterwards, and may have been motivated by his dark past.
Lloyd, investigators believe, may have had information about Hernandez's involvement in a 2012 double murder in Boston that he wanted to keep quiet.
These cryptic Aaron Hernandez text messages to Lloyd the night of the murder, plus his alleged confession to a friend, were both revealed this week.
