The mark places this documentary-type movie above the opening gross of Michael Jackson's This Is It ($7.4 million), though it trails Justin Bieber: Never Say Never ($12.4 million).
One Direction, of course, already dominates the music scene, having recently collected an MTV Video Music Award for Song of the Summer and owning the VEVO record for most video views in a 24-hour period.

Veteran British journalist has passed away at the age of 74, according to the BBC.
Frost died of a suspected heart attack on Saturday night aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, where he was due to give a speech, his family said.
Frost's career in TV news and entertainment spanned almost half a century.
Known both for an amiable personality and incisive sit-downs with prominent figures, he won fame around the world for his interviews with Richard Nixon.
He was the only person to have interviewed all six British prime ministers serving between 1964-2007 and the seven U.S. presidents from 1969-2008.
He also interviewed Orson Welles, Muhammad Ali and Clint Eastwood.
Prime Minister David Cameron praised David Frost for being an "extraordinary man with charm, wit, talent, intelligence and warmth in equal measure."
"The Richard Nixon interviews were among the great broadcast moments, but there were many other brilliant interviews," Cameron said.
"He could be, and certainly was with me, both a friend and a fearsome interviewer."
Frost began television hosting while still a student at Cambridge University. He went on to host the BBC's satirical news show The Week That Was in the early 1960s, and, later, a sketch show called The Frost Report and a long-running BBC Sunday show, Breakfast with Frost. His signature, "Hello, good evening and welcome" was often mimicked.

Amanda Bynes is picking up right where she left off. On Twitter, that is.
Yesterday, the hospitalized 27-year-old actress tweeted, "I love Drake."
It was her first Tweet since July 19, when she said "Drake is gorgeous."
The singular Tweet is still live and was sent from her official account.
The brief, unexpected return to Twitter came one day after her doctors at UCLA Medical Center asked for and were granted an extended long-term hold.
Amanda Bynes was hospitalized under an involuntary 5150 psychiatric hold back on July 22, and has been receiving mental health treatment ever since.
Before that, Tweeting about Drake had been one of her favorite pastimes.
The former child star made headlines March 21 when she wrote, "I want Drake to murder my vagina," and talked about him countless other times.
Drake never responded to the Tweets, though he is aware of them.
"I don't even know who is doing that or what that's about," the rapper told the August issue of XXL. "If that is her, I guess it's a little weird and disturbing."
"It's obviously a behavioral pattern that is way bigger than me."
Few would argue with that. Doctors say Bynes may need long-term hospitalization to treat her severe mental illness, though it's unclear how long.
Some reports have suggested up to a year at UCLA or a related facility, while others say she could move in with her mom in a month or two of she improves.

Kate Bosworth and Michael Polish exchanged vows to become husband and wife in an intimate ceremony in Philipsburg, Montana on Saturday, August 31.
The actress, 30, and film director Polish, 42, said "I do" in front of about 50-75 of their closest friends and family members at The Ranch at Rock Creek.
The couple, who met on the set of 2011 film Big Sur, knew from the get-go that their relationship would be a lasting one, Bosworth told InStyle UK.
"I never even dated my husband-to-be," she said. "He said to me after a few weeks, before we were even together, 'I'm going to marry you.' He just knew."
Looks like he did indeed.
Michael Polish proposed to Bosworth in August 2012 on a trip to South Korea and they made it official a year later. Congrats to the newlyweds!

As has been well documented, Lamar Odom has a problem with drugs and has been unwilling to address it since his addiction spun out of control.
Khloe Kardashian has kicked him out before, only to cave and take him back, but Lamar's DUI arrest Friday morning was apparently the last straw.
According to reports, Lamar didn't even call Khloe OR his lawyers after the arrest, leaving them to find out when TMZ broke the story hours later.
Suffice it to say, his estranged wife was far from thrilled with him.
Khloe and Lamar did spend time together Saturday, but after four hours of talking about his addiction to crack and who knows what else, he was sent away.

No one knows, but the basketball star clearly isn't taking a hint, leaving his wife at the end of her rope and with little choice but to do what she did.
Sources say the couple is "still at an impasse" regarding his addiction, which seems ludicrous given how one-sided the debate should be at this point.
Embroiled in cheating scandals and what looks like a serious substance abuse problem, Odom is effectively ruining his marriage, NBA career and life.
What is Khloe to do at this point? She clearly wants to save Lamar in all those respects, but without effort or even admission on his part it will be a lost cause.
