Meteorite Hits Russia, 514 Injuries Reported Feb 15th 2013, 12:40 A meteorite shot across the sky in Russia today, sending fireballs crashing to Earth, damaging buildings and injuring more than 500 people ... seriously. The meteorite's astonishing arrival was captured on video: Meteorite Hits Russia People going to work in Chelyabinsk (950 miles east of Moscow) heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt a shockwave. The 10-ton fireball exploded across the horizon, leaving a white trail in its wake which could reportedly be seen as far as 125 miles away in Yekaterinburg. Car alarms went off, windows shattered, cell phone networks were interrupted and hundreds of people were hurt by debris caused by the event. Russia's Emergencies Ministry said 514 people sought medical help, mainly for light injuries caused by flying glass, and 112 were kept in hospital.  Fortunately, no fatalities were reported. A local ministry official said it might be linked to an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool due to pass by the Earth at a distance of 17,100 miles. Russia's space agency said the meteorite was traveling at a speed of 19 miles per SECOND and that the meteorite explosion had caused a sonic boom.
