Via press conference this afternoon, the Marin County Deputy Coroner confirmed the following facts about Robin Williams' tragic death Monday morning:
- The actor tried to slit his wrists with a pocket knife, leaving a number of "acute superficial cuts" after the failed attempt.
- He then hanged himself with his belt.
- Williams tied the belt around his neck and secured it between the closet door and door frame. He was found in a seated position, slightly suspended with his right shoulder against the door.
- Robin's personal assistant discovered his body.
The coroner added that chemical substances were found in the comedian's system at the time of his passing and that toxicology results will not be made available for approximately 2-6 weeks.
The official confirmed that Williams had been battling depression and checked in to a Minnesota rehab facility last month in response to his mental illness.
Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, was inside the couple's home and went to sleep around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. She left the house in the morning and returned after the comedy legend's body was already found.
Police are reporting that she was the last person to see the 63-year-old alive.
