Oops, Jameis Winston's bad!
The Heisman winner was cited this week for stealing crab legs from a supermarket in Florida, but he says in a new statement that the incident was a result of ignorance, not deception.
"I went to the supermarket with the intent to purchase dinner but made a terrible mistake for which I'm taking full responsibility. In a moment of youthful ignorance, I walked out of the store without paying for one of my items," Winston said through his lawyer.
Winston has been at the center of a number of legal investigations over the years; most notably when he was accused of sexually assaulting a fellow Florida State student.
"I realize that I am in the public spotlight and my conduct needs to be above reproach," Winston added, concluding:
"Over the last year I've learned that my accomplishments on the fields can be a wonderful thing for my school, teammates, friends, and family. At the same time, I must realize that my mistakes are magnified and can bring great embarrassment to all those who support me every day."
Winston has been suspended from the university baseball team and will need to serve 20 hours of community service for his actions.
Leon County Director of Law Enforcement Michael Wood said in a press conference yesterday that the quarterback was "very cooperative and he seemed fairly honest in that he did not pay for the item" upon being stopped by officials.
