In a stunt casting move we never saw coming, The Mindy Project Season 3 Episode 5 went all meta on us as Shonda Rhimes guest starred as herself.
Actually, maybe we should've seen that coming.
We're surprised there hasn't been a plot yet in which Mindy invites Peter over to watch Grey's Anatomy online. On The Office, her character was a huge fan.
With the beloved title character playing an OBGYN on this project, it was just a matter of time until Shonda came to visit. What took her so long, honestly?
The best part of Shonda's cameo was that it was an amusing aside to a storyline that worked so well throughout: Peter's quest for Dartmouth beer pong supremacy.
Meanwhile, Dr. Lahiri tried to do what she could to impress the new head of the hospital's obstetrics department on The Mindy Project Season 3 Episode 5.
So which of the two plot lines was funnier?
Perhaps not surprisingly, it was Peter and Jeremy's Dartmouth beer-pong bonanza, and not just because it had Dr. Reed feigning an American accent.
From Rhimes to the slow-motion "Turn Down For What" and awesome one-liners galore, this had it all, and at the crux of it, Peter moving on a bit from Lauren.
Mindy's story, by contrast, felt a bit forced.
When Minday, who is out to prove she can beg and cry her way out of anything, tries to charm the new hospital administrator, played by Niecy Nash, it backfires.
So much so that she develops lesbian feelings for Minday. Jeopardizing her marriage. But will Mindy keep up the charade to get the doctors off the graveyard shift?
Despite how well Danny and Mindy play off of one another, and the inherent comedy of his moral code juxtaposed with Mindy's amusing lack of one, it didn't quite work.
It's still worth it to watch The Mindy Project online, because these two are so funny in almost any setting. But they are really reaching with some of these stories.
