O.J. Mayo, a free agent shooting guard who last played for the Milwaukee Bucks, has been dismissed and disqualified from the NBA for violating the league's anti-drug program.
Mayo was the top high school recruit in the country in 2007.
He attended USC and then applied for the NBA draft after one year in college.
According to the rules of his ban, Mayo can apply for reinstatement in two years.
He previously served a 10-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs in 2011.
Mayo has played the last three seasons of his career with the Bucks, fracturing his ankle this past March and missing the rest of the season as a result.
He was on the lookout for a new team this summer, amidst a boom in the league's salary cap that is seeing more more than ever being thrown at various players, from those in the top tier to those far below.
Through his actions, the former third overall draft pick likely cost himself tens of millions of dollars.
For those wondering, it is unclear just what drug Mayo tested positive for.
However, the announcement cited "drugs of abuse," meaning Mayo is NOT out of the league for any performance-enhancing substances.
Instead, "Drugs of Abuse" are listed by the NBA as follows:
Amphetamine and its analogs; Cocaine; LSD; Opiates; and PCP.
