Scott McKenzie Dies; "San Francisco" Singer Was 73 Aug 20th 2012, 19:54 Scott McKenzie, whose hit single "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" became a beloved anthem of the late 1960s, has died. He was 73 years old. McKenzie had been suffering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease that impacts the nervous system. His website confirmed McKenzie's death:   Scott McKenzie - San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) "Scott had been very ill recently and passed away in his home after two weeks in hospital. Farewell our much loved and wonderful friend." Scott's "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" became one of the best known songs during 1967's famed "Summer of Love." The song, which McKenzie sang, had been written by his childhood friend, John Phillips, who went on to form The Mamas and the Papas. In addition to two albums, McKenzie worked and found fame as a songwriter, penning the catchy 1988 tune "Kokomo" for The Beach Boys.
