Wednesday night on Modern Family Season 6 Episode 5, Phil worried when an obnoxious family considers buying the house he was selling next door.
Meanwhile, Jay made an alarming discovery about the family of Manny's girlfriend.
"Won't You Be Our Neighbor" featured plenty of guest stars and great gags that made it entertaining to watch all three of the show's core families.
If you watch Modern Family online lately, you're aware that while the show is rarely not fun, this is not always a given the way it once might have been.
The Pritchett-Delgado family may have landed the best material of all, as we delved deeper into the closet, Jay's business and the business equivalent of Jay.
With Jay putting the finishing touches on a sock dispenser that will propel him past rival Closets Closets Closets Closets and CCCC CEO Earl Chambers, he learns this:
Sophie, Manny's girlfriend, is none other than Earl's granddaughter.
The hilarity ensues, because Jay getting material that is distinctly Jay is a welcome departure from the Gloria interplay, as much as we like that.
The Dunphy family are on fire too, through Phil's real estate career.
He and Claire attempt, and inevitably fail, to steer the house toward their perfect, preferred neighbor family, and away from a family they feel is obnoxious.
Some of the comments and jokes about the prospective neighbors' background felt a bit beneath a show of this quality, but Phil and Claire made up for it.
Unknowingly inviting their would-be neighbors to be swingers with them through carefully chosen (by the writers) words was vintage Modern Family.
As for Mitchell and Cameron, they plot to relieve Lily's stress by pulling her out of a demanding teacher's class and putting her in a more relaxed room.
Relaxed is putting it mildly. The alternative is full-on anarchy.
Neither option is perfect, of course, as the laid back Ms. Sparrow may not be pushing her kids hard enough, but it was a funny and pleasant storyline.
