Gary Oldman is sorry for saying some very dumb stuff.
The actor spouted off to Playboy in a controversial interview this week, defending Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic rant from many years ago and saying of his fellow star:
"Mel Gibson is in a town that's run by Jews, and he said the wrong thing because he's actually bitten the hand that I guess has fed him."
Oldman also went on to state that anyone who claims he or she hasn't insulted other races or religions is a "hypocrite" and he hates "double standards."
The Anti-Defamation League promptly issued a strong rebuke of Oldman's remarks, which led the actor to issue a retraction.
"I am deeply remorseful that comments I recently made in the Playboy Interview were offensive to many Jewish people," Oldman writes in a letter obtained by Deadline. "Upon reading my comments in print, I see how insensitive they may be, and how they may indeed contribute to the furtherance of a false stereotype."
He continued:
"Anything that contributes to this stereotype is unacceptable, including my own words on the matter... I hope you will know that this apology is heartfelt, genuine, and that I have an enormous personal affinity for the Jewish people in general, and those specifically in my life."
Also in response to Oldman's rant, the officer who arrested Gibson in 2006 spoke to TMZ and denied Oldman's charge that he has ever uttered similar ethnic slurs.
"I would like to sign off with "Shalom Aleichem," Oldman concluded in his note. "But under the circumstances, perhaps today I lose the right to use that phrase, so I will wish you all peace."
Kobe Bryant immediately addressed sexual assault charges in 2003. Seated alongside wife Vanessa, he tearfully said he was guilty of adultery, not rape.
