Britney Spears' ex-boyfriend John Sundahl was not killed in Afghanistan, as widely reported earlier this year, he tells The Hollywood Gossip exclusively.
"As you can tell, I'm alive!" Sundahl told us moments ago.
A source told THG yesterday that reports of John's death at the hands of the Taliban in Afghanistan were false, and that Sundahl is actually alive.
Now John himself has confirmed he is among the living.
Earlier this year, multiple sources reported that John Sundahl was killed after he was shot down flying a helicopter over the war-torn land.
John, 44, was working as a private contractor ferrying officials across the country, and his chopper was hit by a missile outside Kandahar.
That part is true, he chillingly says. But he survived.
"I spent two months in the hospital and will be walking with a cane for the rest of my life, but I'm here," Sundahl, now back in the U.S., said.
Sundahl says he does not have a brother Karl, who was quoted by the Mirror (UK) saying that John's family had been told of his death.
John adds that he has attempted to contact both the Mirror and the National Enquirer to refute their original articles, but was rebuffed.
He is not seeking money or publicity, he insists, merely to set the record straight so family and friends don't keep hearing that he's dead.
This certainly seems like a fair request to us.
As for his relationship with Britney Spears, now 33, Sundahl confirms that the two did briefly date in 2007, back when she was in rehab.
He was not in rehab, however ... as a patient.
John and Brit met when he was visiting someone in the same facility and became close, Sundahl says. Nothing scandalous about it.
Their romance didn't last, but their bond did.
He is widely credited with her beat addiction, and for being a positive, influential figure in her life at a time when she had too few of them.
Sundahl says he has kept in touch with Britney through dark times and brighter ones and spoke with her as recently as eight months ago.
We're sure Spears will be happy to hear he survived the harrowing experience in Afghanistan, and we wish him the best in his recovery.
