Meet Kristin Beck.

The 20-year old veteran of the Navy SEALS fought alongside fellow members of the military across numerous dangerous battlefields during her time serving this country… but she did it as a man named Chris.

And a new memoir, titled "Warrior Princess," chronicles this hero's journey.

"Chris really wanted to be a girl and felt that she was a girl and consolidated that identity very early on in childhood," co-author Anne Speckhard tells ABC News.

Beck grew a beard and was an integral part of American special operations, with another former SEAL, Brandon Webb, saying she came across as the "consummate guy's guy."

But the biography explains how Chris kept these two parts of herself separate for such a long period of time. Reads one passage:

"For years Chris had turned off his sexuality like a light switch and lived as a warrior, consumed with the battle -- living basically asexual. For Chris the other SEALs were brothers and in the man's man warrior lifestyle, even if he had wanted to entertain sexual thoughts, there really was never any time to be thinking too much about sexuality."

Beck retired from duty in 2011 and felt as if it was "the right time" to make her long-awaited change.

She is currently undergoing hormone therapy and plans to get sexual reassignment surgery in the near future.

Why pen the book? Writes Beck in the preface:

"To reach out to all of the younger generation and encourage you to live your life fully and to treat each other
