The first footage from The Vampire Diaries Season 5 was revealed at the end of a long series retrospective today at the show's Comic-Con panel.
In San Diego, TVD's "big three" and executive producer Julie Plec teased a number of new developments, along with our first look at the new season.

The closing moments of the series-summarizing montage show the ancient, mysterious, supernatural being addressing a crowd of captivated townsfolk.

Speaking out about the death of Cory Monteith, Glee creator Ryan Murphy has revealed how the show will handle the loss of one of its biggest stars.
Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter that he and the rest of the cast are still grieving: "It's always sad and shocking when somebody so young dies."
"One of the things that made it even more upsetting is that so many of us who knew and loved him were actively involved in trying to get him better."
"When you're faced with something so sad and so shocking, what do you do? Do we cancel the show? Do we start shooting in January? What do we do?"
"The right thing to do for the show, at this point, is to have that character pass," Murphy says of his plans for the premiere, which was pushed back a week.
"Ultimately, we decided the best thing for everyone is to get back to work and be around people who knew him and loved him so that everyone can grieve together."
"When we do a tribute episode to [his] character, we'll do it in a way where the cast will not have to re-create feelings of grief they've had this week, but do it in an upbeat way."
Murphy says the role of Finn Hudson, McKinley High's football star-turned-glee clubber, will not be re-cast, and the season's third episode will be a tribute.
Murphy said he told Cory Monteith's costar and real-life girlfriend, Lea Michele, that he would understand if she didn't want to return to Glee this fall

The odds were ever in the favor of Catching Fire fans at Comic-Con this weekend, as Lionsgate presented a new trailer for this wildly anticipated Hunger Games sequel.
It features new footage from the film, which will take Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss on a dangerous adventure as the face of a District-wide uprising.

It's reportedly a selfie and she's reportedly quite topless, just in case you were wondering.

One of the Internet's most beloved animals has passed away.
Schoep - a dog made famous when a touching picture of him and his owner, John Unger, went viral last summer - died Thursday at the age of 20.
Photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson snapped the famous image of Unger lying in Lake Superior with his pet because the water was therapeutic for Schoep's arthritis.
In response, thousands of dollars poured in from Web users to help with the canine's ailment.
"Schoep and John had an amazing relationship ... I hope that people can give John some space and privacy for now ... he just lost his best friend," Stonehouse Hudson told The Pioneer Press.

The ongoing welfare investigation into Nadya "Octomom" Suleman has turned up some fairly damning evidence, according to her financial records.
L.A. County Department of Welfare Fraud officials got a tip that the mom of 14 was collecting government funds, despite making $200,000 in 2012.
Because Octomom has 14 dependent children, she can still qualify for public assistance if she earns $119K a year or less - a ton for most people.
But she made a lot more than that (due to the Octomom porn video, strip club gigs and more), and could be in deep trouble with the state as a result.
From January-May 2013, she got $6,666 she had no right to collect, on top of $9,016 in Food Stamps she shouldn't have gotten, for $15,683 total.

Emma Roberts' domestic violence arrest stunned the public last week, but to some of the star's friends, it wasn't as big of a surprise as you'd think.
In fact, they fear she's headed down a dark path a la Lindsay Lohan.
Believe it or not, 22-year-old Emma - Eric Roberts' daughter and Julia Roberts' niece - has become deeply immersed in the L.A. party scene.
It started, allegedly, when she broke up with Chord Overstreet.
When she and the Glee star split up, she started hitting the clubs hardcore and surrounding herself with a crew that may not be the best influence.
Because Emma won't acknowledge any change or problem, friends can't get through to her. That includes after her alleged fight with Evan Peters.
Roberts wouldn't talk to her friends about the incident with her boyfriend, instead, acting like nothing happened after he declined to press charges.
It's unclear what led to the fight or if she was partying beforehand, but people worry after she gave Peters a bloody nose and a bite mark (allegedly).

The owner of Jersey Joe's Pizzeria in San Diego denies that he is the man who appears to be masturbating in a photo circulating around the Internet.
Reporters at the pizza shop showed Giusepp "Jersey Joe" Scire the photo, which was posted on the photo sharing website 4Chan, and then Yelp.
"It is not me [in the photo] and that's not my pizzeria," Scire said.
Scire said that he "just fired two guys recently" and suggested that he may be the victim of a disgruntled ex-employee and/or a 4Chan hoax.
The bombshell dropped Wednesday, when 4Chan users posted links to some random, unsecured webcams, allegedly at Jersey Joe's.
That's when, users claim, a dude was seen rubbing one out.
The pic shows the man, which Scire denies is him, in the kitchen a white T-shirt and shorts, sitting at a desk with a firm grasp of the situation.
Later in the day, Scire allegedly was serving a customer pizza when he became irate as the customer asked him about the masturbation photo.
He threatened to call the cops, though it's unclear it he has.
Critics on Yelp immediately took to Jersey Joe's page to poke fun at the business with more puns than this guy's Facebook relationship status update:

Setting up a lemonade stand for peace is one way to protest the Westboro Baptist Church.
Holding a rally in which gay couples kiss over the grave of the founder's mother is another.
And that's exactly what went down on July 14 when the Satanic Temple - an organization that looks to foster "benevolence and empathy" among all individuals - took members to the very cemetery in which Catherine Idalette Johnston is buried.
She's the parent of WBC founder Fred Phelps Jr.
Leaning over her grave, members of the same-sex then smooched each other on the lips.
"Upon completion of the pink mass ceremony, Catherine Johnston is now gay in the afterlife," reads the Satanic Temple website, triumphantly.
"Fred Phelps is obligated to believe that his mother is now gay."
"If beliefs are inviolable rights, nobody has the right to challenge our right to believe that Fred Phelps believes that his mother is now gay."
Moreover, at one point, Temple spokesman Lucien Greaves placed his exposed penis on Johnston headstone.
The temple has asked same-sex couples around the globe to follow its leads; visit the grave; and perform their own pink masses in order to send the WBC a message.

Glee has pushed back the premiere of its fifth season, originally set for September 19, following the tragic death of Cory Monteith last weekend.
The hit Fox show will now return one week later, September 26.
In a statement, Fox said that the network, producers and 20th Century Fox TV decided to delay starting production until August, pushing back the premiere.
Vancouver, B.C., police found Cory Monteith dead in his hotel after he apparently overdosed on heroin and alcohol. The actor was just 31 years old.
It's not yet known how the hit, music-filled show will address the loss of Finn, a central character for its first four seasons, in the upcoming Season 5.

Rae Dawn Chong has issued a bizarre statement explaining her slam of Oprah Winfrey earlier this week, claiming it was all a compliment in context.
In what context calling someone a "biotch" and/or a "field n--ger" could be considered positive things, however, remains an open question for now.
Rae Dawn Chong defended herself on Facebook, though her explanation was as confusing at best, and issued a video statement as well. Watch:
"OMG I wake up to TMZ highlighting comments I made on a radio show out of context," she wrote as part of her two-pronged statement to TMZ.
"I swear I did not JUST say O was a field N and I was making a point about America during slave times ... and I stand behind what I said but out of context it is bad."
Ya think?
"In context, I was actually complimenting Oprah," Chong insists. "Do I have issues with Oprah? Yes. Am I perfect? No. Do I take back everything I said? No."
"Am in pain that it's caused pain to me, to her? Yes."
So she's in pain that this became a thing, basically.
Long story short: Chong does NOT apologize, although she regrets using the N-word to describe her former co-star in The Color Purple ... maybe.
According to Rae Dawn, O is so uggers that she wouldn't have qualified as a "house n--ger" but rather would have been "field n--ger" back in the day.
In her explanation, she claims what she meant is Winfrey rose about all obstacles to get where she is, and should be praised ... or something.
Throughout the confusing video, Rae never really elaborates on how "field n--ger" is a compliment ... or how calling her a fat, brown-nosing kiss-ass.

Pink has no hard feelings. She isn't angry over being dissed by Kanye West a few years ago in a clip that just surfaced for the first time this week.
Yeezus slammed both Pink and Taylor Swift following the 2009 MTV VMAs (when he famously yanked the mic from Taylor), but Pink is not bitter.
In fact, she said that she's probably guilty of the same exact thing!
When news of the alleged rant reached Pink, she was cool with it.
She tweeted, "Oh come on y'all. If people secretly recorded me and all the $h!t I talk ... It's all good. All love. And we all still here. Peace please."
Pink, ladies and gentlemen. She rules.
While the singer may not be angry in the least, this is the latest in a string of incidents in which the rapper's rage issues have been well documented.
Secretly recorded or not, this is one angry individual it seems.
"What the f**k was Pink performing?" West is allegedly heard saying in the leaked audio, the same night he legendarily cut off a young Taylor.
"Don't nobody know that song. Pink performed twice! Two songs? How the f**k Pink perform two songs and I didn't even get asked to perform 'Heartless.'"
