Last week, we reported that Nicole Richie and Joel Madden were on the brink of divorce, and friends of the couple didn't expect them to last through the year.
Now, it looks as though the situation is even worse than previously thought, and Richie and Madden may be announcing their separation within the next few weeks.
"Nicole and Joel are going through a very tough time right now and their friends do not think that their marriage is going to survive," a source tells Radar Online.
"Joel is saying he cannot take it anymore and that neither of them are happy when they're together."
The couple has two children together, and insiders say their relationship has deteriorated to the point that it's beginning to affect their parenting.
"Everyone is mainly concerned with the children and Joel has not been actively participating in their lives," says the insider.
"Nicole, on the other hand, is always the one taking her kids to and from school, but she has lost even more weight and has not had a smile on her face for almost a year."
Witnesses say the couple made an appearance at a charity event over the weekend, but both Joel and Nicole appeared to be miserable.
Sources claim Richie and Madden's unhappiness seems all the more extreme now that it's contrasted with the newlywed glee of Joel's brother, Benji Madden, and Cameron Diaz, who married in a secret ceremony in January.
