For months now, we've been hearing that Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are on the brink of divorce.
Last week, several sources reported that Nicole kicked Joel out and had stopped wearing her wedding ring in public. Not exactly the most encouraging signs.
But while all signs seemed to point to Splitsville, yesterday, Joel and Nicole celebrated Mother's Day together, and Joel posted the below pic on Instagram.
Many saw it as an obvious attempt to address the rumors without really saying anything about the future of his marriage.
"Happy Mothers Day to my best friend and partner in rhyme," Joel captioned the photo. "Best wife, mother and friend a father could ever ask for."
A Mother's Day shout-out from a husband to his wife may not seem all that noteworthy, but the Maddens rarely interact on social media, and they generally keep their relationship as private as possible.
So many believe that Joel is growing tired of the tabloid reports (whether they're true or not), and he posted the photo in an effort to make the rumors stop.
If that was his intention, it might have been a good idea to throw an "I love you" in there and not refer to his wife as his "friend" two times in as many sentences.
Maybe Joel's just not cut out for this whole romance thing...or maybe he's coyly trying to squash the rumors and prepare us for an announcement at the same time.
