Christopher Lane, a baseball player for East Central University in Oklahoma, was murdered last Friday in a completely random act by three area teens.
Three boys, ages 15, 16 and 17 are in custody for the slaying.
According to the deeply disturbing AP report, they simply decided to kill the 22-year-old for the heck of it. Duncan, Okla., police chief Danny Ford said:
"They saw [Lane] go by, and one of them said: 'There's our target.'"
He went on, chillingly, adding, "The boy who talked to us said: 'We were bored and didn't have anything to do, so we decided to go kill somebody."
"They followed him in the car to that area, shot him in the back and drove off," Ford said, adding that they decided to murder Lane just for "the fun of it."
Lane was visiting the town Duncan, where his girlfriend and her family live.
He jogged passed a home where three teenage boys were staying and that apparently is all that led to him being gunned down and slain at random.
Two of the three boys have previously been in trouble with the law.
Lane was a resident of Australia and had just returned to Oklahoma for the school year last week. Now he is dad, a victim of the most senseless violence.
The local D.A.'s office is expected to file first-degree murder charges Tuesday. It's not yet known if the three individuals will be tried as juveniles or adults.
