Josh Elliott is leaving Good Morning America to join NBC Sports, while Amy Robach will replace him as co-anchor, ABC announced in a memo Sunday.
ABC News president Ben Sherwood confirmed that he had been contract talks with Elliott for several months and were not able to agree to terms.
While "we worked hard to close a significant gap between our generous offer and his expectations ... Josh felt he deserved a different deal," he said.
As a result, Elliott "chose a new path," but Sherwood went on to add that, "I want to thank Josh for his many contributions to GMA and ABC News."
Amy Robach, who revealed in October that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer following an on-air mammogram, will co-anchor the show.
She, Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos will be at the desk.
"We always knew Amy was special and we have all been especially inspired to watch her battle breast cancer with grace and determination," Sherwood said.
"Indeed, she thrilled us with two weeks of memorable dispatches from Sochi anchoring our Olympic coverage ... all between chemo treatments."
"Amy will be a fierce, formidable full-time addition to our GMA team."
Elliott marks the second departure from the popular morning show in recent month
