One of the biggest stories in football in 2014 (a year with lots of major news) was the drafting of Michael Sam by the St. Louis Rams.
Sam was the first openly gay athlete to be selected in any of the nation's major sports drafts, and many in the GLBT community saw the move as a major step toward a more widespread acceptance of gays in all career fields.
Unfortunately, Sam was cut by the Rams before the start of the 2014 regular season.
He was briefly picked up by the Dallas Cowboys before being dropped from that squad as well.
Now, Sam is speaking about his inability to land a spot on an NFL roster, revealing for the first time that he believes he was bounced out of the league because of his sexual orientation:
Asked if by a TMZ cameraman if he believes he was cut as a result of coming out, Sam replied, "I think I was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year last year, so I don't think it had to do with talent."
Of course, NFL fans will be quick to point out that there's a long list of players who were dominant in college, but couldn't cut it in the pros.
We may never know for certain if Sam was a victim of bigotry or - like Tim Tebow before him - simply a much-hyped prospect who didn't fit with any NFL team.
But Sam fans will be happy to hear that despite a discouraging start to his career, the man remains determined to make it to the big show. Best of luck!
