On Dance Moms Season 5 Episode 9, the team returned to its native Pittsburgh, but the tension from L.A. lingered within the maligned ranks of the ALDC.
In fact, Abby used the poor showing in Tinseltown as fuel to make a tough decision that sent shock waves reverberating through the entire operation ...
Win or go home. That's how she operates, and her team hasn't been doing enough of the former. So maybe it's time some of its members go home.
As soon as Dance Moms Season 5 Episode 9 began on Lifetime, Abby Lee Miller put her money where her mouth is and lived up to her age old adage.
"Everyone is replaceable," Miller has often warned her charges, and this week, she took that philosophy beyond threat level and actually put it into action.
After being warned that her team's group number would have to enter in the teen division in this week's competition, "The Great Divide," she threw down:
"I like the competition, I don't like their ages. 12 years old is teen."
"This is the junior elite competition team and if we keep finding competitions that teen is 12, you're not junior anymore, you're teen. And guess what?"
"Once you're a teen. I'm finished with you," Abby revealed.
Oh. No. She. Didn't. Obviously, the moms were stunned.
Jill Vertes and Kira Girard, whose daughter Kalani Hilliker is the oldest member of this talented group at 14, tried to clarify Abby's plans as they sank in.
"You would take some of the teens out and keep some of the younger ones and put them in?" Girard asked, and Abby Lee Miller nodded in the affirmative.
Meanwhile, Holly Frazier was upset that Abby might boot her daughter Nia Frazier, 13, but Abby was adamant that this makes the unit more competitive.
"When you dance in the teen division, the level of difficulty is so much more advanced and we couldn't even win in the junior division in L.A.," Miller said.
"Kalani and Nia pull the average age above 12, so if I pull one out, then we're back in the junior division where we belong," Abby explained of her move.
And unlike a lot of Abby's boasts, she was serious, too.
During rehearsals, the Beast of the East announced that the talented but aging Kalani Hilliker would not be competing with the rest of the group here.
"She is the oldest. So, she's not in the group routine. She was brought here to be my big 13 and over winner, and she hasn't won big yet," Miller said.
On the plus side, she tried to spin this as a potential positive for her: "Maybe by not begin in the group dance, she can really concentrate on this solo."
She did just that, snagging a first-place win with her contemporary piece. The group was equally successfully, taking home first in the junior division.
