The controversial installment ripped a story straight from recent headlines, as Olivia Pope found herself trying to diffuse a negotiation between local police and a distraught father (played Courtney B. Vance).
The latter was guarding the body of his son, Brandon Parker, who had just been gunned by an officer.
Yes, the situation was very much meant to remind viewers of explosive scandals in Ferguson, Missouri and in New York city with Eric Garner.
In a bold move by creator Shonda Rhimes, Scandal tackled the hopeless, frustrated feelings of many African-Americans these days when it comes to how they are seen by those in positions of authority.
Olivia, who was hired by the police officers, spent the hour trying to protect her clients… but also trying to find justice for the father standing over his slain child.
In the end, the officer that killed Brandon was actually arrested for tampering evidence and for shooting an unarmed kid, the sort of outcome that decidedly NOT happen after the real-life incidents on which this episode was based.
Rhimes took to Twitter afterward to explain how she and her writers arrived at this conclusion.
"We had a great deal of debate about this ending. Whether to be hopeful or not. It was really hard," she wrote. "In the end, we went with showing what fulfilling the dream SHOULD mean. The idea of possibility. And the despair we feel now.
Some, of course, have praised Rhimes for taking such a stance...
... while others have criticized her for taking a political stance on a TV show.
We recommend that all watch Scandal online in order to see how the show portrayed this difficult, delicate situation. Only then can you really form an opinion.
Kerry Washington's breakout role came in the Julia Stiles-driven film Save the Last Dance. She played Chenille, a teen mother who befriends Stiles' character.
One of Tony Goldwyn's first major roles came as Carl Bruner, the guy who killed Patrick Swayze in Ghost. But hey, if he hadn't killed his best friend, we wouldn't have gotten that pottery scene and Unchained Melody wouldn't mean anything.
NOEL!!!! Scott Foley's time on Felicity led to his marriage to Jennifer Garner (before she cheated on him with Michael Vartan. WHO CHEATS ON SCOTT FOLEY!?!? NO ONE, THAT'S WHO!)
Is he a bad guy? Is he a good guy? NO ONE CAN DECIDE! One thing we know is that Scott Foley as Jake Ballard adds a certain something-something to the Olivia Pope love drama.
On Scandal, Bellamy Young turned what started as a three episode guest appearance into a full-fledged character, Mellie Grant, the First Lady everyone loves and loves to hate.
Terrence Steadman was a central figure on Prison Break. Lincoln Burrows was framed for his murder. That sounds like a character right up Jeff Perry's alley.
These days, Jeff Perry plays Cyrus Beene, a gay Republican White House Chief of Staff convinced his man is the best man for the job because it puts him closer to power.
Guillermo Diaz played a character named Scarface in the Dave Chappelle comedy Half Baked. He later reprised the role for several episodes of Chappelle's Show.
As Abby Whelan, Darby Stanchfield plays one of the most polarizing Gladiators. Some people love her. Some people hate her. She'll go over the cliff for Olivia Pope no matter what.
David Rosen was supposed to be a guest role only, but fans reacted so well, and Shonda loved Joshua Malina so much, she decided to keep him around. For now.
Joe Morton showed up on Scandal as a mystery man called Command. It was later revealed that he is Olivia Pope's father, Rowan Pope. He's the baddest of the bad.
Elsewhere, meanwhile, Fitz went about trying to find a replacement Vice President who would not be electable as President next election because he vowed to help Mellie get into the Oval Office.
And the First Lady came up with the answer: Susan Ross, the milquetoast Virginia senator that Olivia a while ago got voted into office.
