April Fools' Day can be hilarious, but also heartbreaking, as this teen found out after sending a prank breakup text to her boyfriend that backfired hardocre.
In a story that has gone viral all across the world since, 17-year-old Hayleigh McBay from Scotland decided to mess with her boyfriend, David Clarke.
"I don't want to be with you anymore," Hayleigh texted him, followed by, "I'm not happy." Maybe this hit a little close to home, because David's response?
Not what she had in mind. "Thank God you said it first" was his reply, followed by "you said it first so I didn't have to" when she asked for clarification.
Wow. Didn't see that one coming. McBay tweeted about the failed prank, and the exchange (above) became an instant hit, but it's not quite what it seems:
Clarke was just messing with her right back, it turns out;
She messed with Twitter by not mentioning this fact.
So many layers of April Fools' punking going on here.
"I just thought it would be funny to see if he would fall for it!" she said, denying that it was all staged, and claiming she fell for his reverse pranking.
"He knew straight away I was joking, so the prank kind of failed!" Hayleigh says, adding that despite their April 1 antics, "We're totally fine and still together."
That's good. As is the fact that April Fools' Day is gone for the next 363 days. We don't know if the Internet could handle this more than once a year.
