Tony Farmer - an 18-year old rising senior at Garfield Heights High School in Ohio who was ranked as one of the top 100 high school basketball recruits in the country - was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday for kidnapping and felonious assault.
Upon hearing the news, Farmer collapsed to the floor out of shock and agony. See for yourself here:
The star athlete expected to receive probation from Judge Pamela Barker because so many friends and family members spoke out on his behalf.
Even Andrea Lane, the ex-girlfriend who Farmer attacked last April, asked for a lenient sentence.
"I know he was a good person," she told the judge. "I hope he still is."
In July, Farmer pleaded guilty to kidnapping, felonious assault, robbery and intimidating a victim, charges that stemmed from his altercation with Lane in the lobby and parking lot of her apartment complex in Bedford Heights.
The altercation was caught on video camera.
Given the chance to speak in court, Farmer apologized to Lane and her family and then asked the judge to let him finish high school so he could earn a basketball scholarship. Top programs such as Michigan State had shown interest in the 6'7" forward.
"I'm really not a bad kid," Farmer told Barker.
The judge will review Farmer's sentence after 180 days and there's still a chance it could be reduced.
