Richard Engel, NBC News Team, Released from Captivity in Syria Dec 18th 2012, 13:19 Richard Engel and his production team are safe and sound. The chief foreign correspondent for NBC News, Engel and members of his crew were blindfolded, abducted and "tossed into the back of a truck" last Thursday, according to the network's official report. They were taken to a location believed to be near the town of Ma'arrat Misrin. But after five days in captivity, the group has been freed. "After being kidnapped and held for five days inside Syria by an unknown group, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and his production crew members have been freed unharmed," an NBC statement reads. "We are pleased to report they are safely out of the country." The network adds that no hostage was harmed during the harrowing ordeal, but the crew did reportedly witness a gun fight during transportation yesterday. Engel joined NBC in 2003.
