It's the most important position on the field, but it's also the deepest.
So just how early should you take a quarterback in your fantasy football draft? It depends on which quarterback.
In our first of many positional breakdowns to help readers build the highest-scoring roster possible, we run through the various signal-caller options, dividing Aaron Rodgers and company into tiers...
TOP TIER:
- Aaron Rogers.
- Drew Brees.
Both are guaranteed to pass for over 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns. Rodgers gets the nod due to his scrambling ability (three rushing scores last year), but either would be a solid first round pick. The more sure players in fantasy football.
SECONDARY SLINGERS:
- Matt Ryan.
- Russell Wilson.
- Cam Newton.
- Tom Brady.
The Falcons added a pass-catching tight end in Stephen Jackson, giving Ryan yet another option to go along with Roddy White and Julio Jones. Wilson and Newton rank above Brady for their running ability - along with the fact that the Patriots have lost multiple receiving threats to free agency, surgery or, in the case of Aaron Hernandez, murder charges.
THIRD RATE:
- Peyton Manning.
He's getting up there in age and we can't ignore that neck injury. Can he really continue to produce at such a high level?
FOURTH AND NOT SO LONG:
- Colin Kaepernick
- Matthew Stafford
- Robert Griffin III.
- Andrew Luck.
- Eli Manning.
You can win a fantasy football title with any of these stars under center. There are questions regarding each (Can Kaepernick repeat his success? Will Stafford stop throwing interceptions? Can Griffin stay healthy? Is Luck's receiving corps for real? Can you survive those two or three Eli Manning Games per season?), but there is also a lot of upside to each.
BOTTOM LINE:
Draft Rodgers or Brees early on... or wait awhile. Even outside the Top 10 listed here, Tony Romo, Ben Roethlisberger and Joe Flacco are all capable of putting up big numbers.
A quarterback may be important, but there's no reason to torture yourself by deciding between Ryan and Brady. Nab a top wideout or running back instead and let a solid QB fall into your lap later on.
