Adultery website Ashley Madison has been hacked by nefarious cyber criminals who are threatening to expose 37 million cheaters.
Ashley Madison, which uses the advertising slogan "Life is short. Have an affair," confirms it was hit and some user data was stolen.
CNN first reported the breach late on Sunday, noting that the hackers were threatening to release all Ashley Madison's records.
The company said that while it had stringent security measure in place, they "have unfortunately not prevented this attack."
"At this time, we have been able to secure our sites, and close the unauthorized access points," the company said, but is it too late?
Ashley Madison claims to have 37 million members, and has in the past bragged about its data security. So much for that.
The site is an obvious target for hackers, given its secretive nature and the potential usefulness of data in blackmail schemes.
The hackers, who call themselves the "Impact Team," have not made it entirely clear what they're after in this cyber-conquest.
Ashley Madison's hack follows a similar event in March, when Adult FriendFinder and its 64 million users were reportedly hacked.
