Princess Diana was one of the world's most famous and photographed women, but one image of the late mother of Princes William and Harry evaded publication.
Until now. A lost Princess Diana photo marked "not to be published" from 1981 is set to be auctioned, and is causing a stir. Take a look at it below:
The black-and-white photo shows a teenage Diana on a Swiss ski holiday lounging on the lap of a young, unidentified man, who is resting a book on her shoulder.
A bottle of liquor also rests on a window ledge above her head, creating an image that was certain to be unfit for a future princess - at least at the time.
The picture was marked "not to be published," according to the Daily Mirror (UK), which acquired it in 1981, just two days after Diana Spencer was engaged to Prince Charles.
"This would certainly not be in the way the Royal Family would have Diana to have been presented," said Eric Caren, owner of the Caren Archive, to the Daily Mail.
Diana passed away in 1997. The photo was kept hidden in the paper's archives until it was purchased in 2005 by the private Caren Archive.
The image is now set for auction by RR Auctions in New Hampshire, and is being described as a "salacious teenage image of the future princess."
It's hard to believe this was considered salacious - Kate Middleton bikini photos were par for the course when she was dating William - but that's what they say.
