The head of the European golf tour apologized for using the term "colored" in a TV interview in which he was reacting to the Tiger Woods-Sergio Garcia feud.
European Tour CEO George O'Grady commented, in defense of Garcia, that "most of Sergio's friends are colored athletes in the United States."
The word "colored" was once widely used in the United States to refer to African-Americans but it is now considered antiquated and offensive.
As a result, "I deeply regret using an inappropriate word in a live TV interview for Sky Sports for which I unreservedly apologize," said O'Grady.
Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia have exchanged barbs over the past two weeks, dating back to the third round of The Players Championship in Florida.
Garcia accused Woods of distracting him during the round and making him hit a bad shot, which Tiger denied, accusing Sergio of being a complainer.
But the situation got uglier Tuesday when Golf Channel's Steve Sands jokingly asked Garcia if he would have Woods over for dinner during the U.S. Open.
"We'll have him round every night," he replied. "We will serve fried chicken."
Garcia initially released a half-hearted apologetic statement, then followed it up with a
