A very, very, very long winter is coming.
With Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 1 airing on April 6, executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss spoke to Entertainment Weekly this week and confirmed a rumor that's been out there for awhile:
They have an end date in mind.
"It feels like this is the midpoint for us," Benioff tells the magazine. "If we're going to go seven seasons, which is the plan, season 4 is right down the middle, the pivot point."
There is the thorny issue that the series might actually fly past its source material because George R.R. Martin has only penned five novels to date.
But this is an issue the showrunners will deal with when/if the time comes.
"Once we got to the point where we felt like we're going to be able to tell this tale to its conclusion, [seven seasons] became [a clear] goal," Benioff adds. "Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us."
That's true. But that doesn't make it feel any less sad to us, no matter how far into the future we're gazing.
