The Duggar family is crushed by the cancelation of 19 Kids and Counting and wish they could return to TV, according to sources close to them.
When news broke that TLC canceled 19 Kids and Counting, no one was more sad, disappointed and heartbroken than the Arkansas family.
The axe fell two months after the release of the 2006 police report surfaced revealing that Josh Duggar was accused of molesting five girls.
At least two of his victims were sisters Jill Dillard and Jessa Seewald. Two others were all but certainly his sisters Joy-Anna and Jana Duggar.
Josh apologized and said he had "acted inexcusably" after the report was released, but public opinion of the Duggars never really recovered.
"I think Jim Bob and Michelle honestly did expect people to just move on," the source adds. "Their thinking is, they put this behind them ages ago."
"Why wouldn't the rest of the world?"
The long and short answer to that:
Josh's arrest was seen as the height of hypocrisy, given the things the Duggars don't allow and their intense political and religious convictions.
A source says the evangelical Christian family, who often discussed their religious faith on TV, is "heartbroken that they've now lost that platform."
Can they ever regain it in any capacity?
"They want to return to TV because they truly believe it was part of God's plan for them to spread the word about their faith," the source adds.
With TLC pulling the plug, after sponsors bailed en masse and public criticism of the Duggars continued to mount, they are fresh out of options.
Kate Gosselin of all people could prove to be a blueprint for them, though; Jon & Kate Plus 8 was also canceled by TLC amid sordid scandals.
However, given the passage of time, occasional Kate Plus 8 specials began popping up on the network, and still do so with some regularity.
Think the Duggars will follow a similar path? First and foremost, the family road to redemption will be to help TLC spotlight sexual abuse crimes.
After that, who the heck knows.
