Oscar Pistorius broke down in tears in a South African courtroom Friday after being charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
The Olympic sprinter's defense team requested to postpone the bail hearing, as did the prosecution. He did not enter a plea and will remain in custody.
In his first public response, Pistorius's family and management team said in a statement that "the alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms."
The statement also said Pistorius "would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family" of Reeva Steenkamp, who died at his home at age 30.
Though authorities initially believed that Oscar Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder, they have since downplayed that possibility.
"There is no other suspect involved," police spokeswoman Brigadier Denise Beukes told the AP, noting that several witnesses are being interviewed.
Oscar Pistorius was charged with murder early Thursday.
The 26-year-old athlete, a double amputee, became the first Paralymic athlete to run with able-bodied athletes in an Olympic games last summer in London.
Reeva Steenkamp, a model and advocate for women, appeared to be in good spirits before her tragic death, tweeting about Valentine's Day just hours earlier.
"It should be a day of love for everyone," the model wrote.
