Students at Michigan's Grand Valley State are protesting the school's recent decision to remove the giant, wrecking ball-esque pendulum on campus.
One that sparked many a Miley Cyrus parody in recent days.
Assembled on the spot where the sculpture once sat, students held their cell phones in the air and sang the lyrics to Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" in protest.
"It's just college kids having fun," Rya Northrop, a senior.
"It's funny. I think it's hilarious."
The university said it removed the pendulum, which does strikingly resemble Miles' music video apparatus, because it needed to verify its "structural integrity."
It was not designed to hold multiple students, they added.
Tim Thimmesch, Associate V.P. of facilities services, said:
"We really do need to verify the structural integrity right now, and consider the safety ramifications and look whether there's a better way to install it."
Thimmesch stuck by the story that the university decided to remove the sculpture over safety concerns, not simply in reaction to the viral nudity.
"It's given us a few chuckles," he acknowledged.
In the video, Cyrus smashes concrete with a sledgehammer and swings nude atop the ball. Some of the GVSU students' parodies weren't dissimilar.
Students said that while they understand the university's desire to ensure safety, the decision to remove the sculpture was somewhat of an overreaction.
"Maybe they should have put a sign in front of it," said Emily Hauxwell, a freshman psychology major. "But taking it down? It's kind of a staple here."
Caleb Geselamn reacted similarly, saying the decision to remove the landmark want too far, even though he understands that some students misbehaved.
"I think the college overreacted," said Geselamn, a freshman who's studying pre-med. "They probably should have just yelled at them or put signs up."
