Theme parties are nothing new for Greek life, but what happened to togas? Aren't these parties just supposed to be bonfires and keg stands and streaking through the Quad?
The Theta Xi fraternity at the University of Michigan has had their social privileges revoked during an investigation into a party they planned and advertised on Facebook.
Their theme? "Hood Ratchet Thursday." No, we're not joking. Even Julianne Hough could've told them this was a bad idea.
Students of color at U of M who saw the invitation circulating on Facebook complained to University administration about the racial overtones of the party. They believe the party parodied black culture, was intended to belittle, and was maliciously intended.
Theta Xi brothers have said the fraternity will not be commenting on the matter.
Geralyn Gaines, secretary for the Black Student Union, says she was most offended by their use of the term "ratchet," a word used to describe "something terrible or someone who doesn't know how to handle themselves." Because the invitation specifically asked for "bad bitches" and "ratchet p*ssy" to attend, Gaines believes Theta Xi were actively mocking Black culture.
The University responded to complaints immediately, shut down the party planning, and launched an investigation. Dean of Students Laura Blake Jones commented, "Obviously, the way this party was both conceived of and executed is in direct contradiction to the standards of our university."
