Jillian Michaels is explaining her decision to exit NBC's The Biggest Loser after 10 years, citing irreconcilable differences (so to speak) with producers.
The 40-year-old fitness guru admits to People that "there were some fundamental [differences with Loser producers] that have existed for a while."
"I don't want the fans to think I feel like I'm too big for the show or that I'm seeking greener pastures. I'm so grateful to the show and so sad to leave."
One main issue was producers' portrayal of Michaels herself.
"In the beginning of the show it was tough love. You saw the tough, and you saw the love," she says, but lately, "You saw none of the relationships."
"[You saw] none of the bonds that I build with my clients."
As a result, the trainer believes, "millions of people have this warped negative perception of me" as a harsh person, and that spilled into her personal life.
Commentators on TV shows would call her "abusive," and one even quipped "about what kind of mom I must be," Michaels says with a shudder.
Things only got worse when, this past season, Jillian was accused of cheating by allowing her team to take caffeine pills (a move she stands by).
Picking up her daughter from camp, Michaels says someone had told her little girl, "I know who your mom is ... she's a cheater. I saw it on TV."
Increasingly displeased with the direction of the show, she wanted out.
Rachel Frederickson, who was crowned The Biggest Loser winner last season and sparked controversy with her staggering weight loss, was the last straw.
"I had to take a hard look at my work," says Michaels, "I came to the conclusion that moving forward, I need to be able to have an impact on the outcome of what I do."
After some soul-searching, that ultimately meant leaving the show for the partner of Heidi Rhoades and the mother of son Phoenix, 2, and daughter Lukensia, 4.
