SportsCenter anchor Stuart Scott was first diagnosed with cancer back in 2007. A tumor discovered during an emergency appendectomy was treated successfully, and Scott returned to work less than a month later.
In early 2013, however, Scott revealed that his cancer had returned and, though this time it wouldn't be as easily treated, Scott vowed that he would fight and continue to work for as long as possible.
Over a year and a half later, Scott is still going strong and he was honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at last night's 2014 ESPY Awards.
As countless sports stars and fellow cancer survivor Robin Roberts looked on, Scott accepted the award named for the legendary North Carolina State basketball coach who gave a stirring speech at the first ESPYs ceremony in 1993, just two months before he died from cancer.
Scott revealed that he had just ended a seven-day hospital stay on Friday and, until recently, was unsure if he would be healthy enough to accept the award:
"I had liver complications. I had kidney failure. I had four surgeries in the span of seven days," Scott said. "As of Sunday, I didn't even know if I could make it here. I couldn't fight, but doctors and nurses could. People that I love, my friends and family, they could fight."
In one of the most stirring segments of his speech, Scott echoed a famous quote from Coach Valvano, reminding the crowd, "Don't give up. Don't ever give up," before adding his own insight:
"When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer, by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live. So live. Fight like hell. And when you get too tired to fight, lay down, rest, and let someone else fight for you."
