Brianne Altice, a former high school teacher accused of having sexual relationships with three students, wept as she took a plea deal on Wednesday.
One of the boys was 16 and two were 17 when they were having sex with Brianne Altice, 35. One testified that he considered her to be his girlfriend.
During their yearlong sexual relationship, one of the three Utah boys was obviously consenting, but the law says he was not old enough to do so legally.
Moreover, Utah state law also specifies that a person, regardless of age, cannot consent to sex if the other person is in a position of special trust.
School officials even knew about her inappropriate behavior and didn't do enough to protect the students from her, the boys and their parents say.
In a lawsuit against the Davis School District, several parents say the running joke at the high school was, "Who is Ms. Altice sleeping with now?"
Altice, who taught high school English, pleaded guilty to three counts of forcible sexual abuse in exchange for prosecutors dropping 11 other counts.
Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams said he'd love to comment on the allegations but that the civil lawsuit precludes him from doing so.
Prosecutor Susan Hunt said the three victims are on board with the plea deal, in which each count carries a possible sentence of 1 to 15 years in prison.
Altice's attorney, Ed Brass, said his client is upset about the conviction, but wanted to resolve a case to avoid risking an uncertain outcome at trial.
Altice was first arrested back in October 2013. A year later a second student reported having sexual relationship with her, followed by yet another.
Amazingly, allegations emerged earlier this year that she had sex with the third victim following first arrest, while she was out on bail awaiting trial.
She was fired in February 2014.
