Pretty Little Liars chAnged the gAme last night.
On Pretty Little Liars Season 6 Episode 10, viewers finally received a number of answers to a number of pressing questions, most prominently of all: WHO IS A?!?
Turns out, A is Charles... who is actually Charlotte... who is actually CeCe Drake... who used to be Charles until she started living life as a woman.
At no point in the summer finale was it mentioned whether or not CeCe underwent gender reassignment surgery - but the fact remains that the major Pretty Little Liars villain is someone who has switched sexes.
Creator I. Marlene King is therefore facing a bit of a backlash today.
She was asked point blank by Entertainment Tonight whether her series is just jumping on board the ongoing "transgender trend" highlighted these days by Caitlyn Jenner.
"We definitely came up with this idea three and a half years ago," King replied in defense. "It's been a long time in the works and if you go back and you watch the CeCe episodes... we've told you she is A so many times."
The executive adds that she's all for this transgender trend in the real world and on TV... but she didn't intend to jump on any "bandwagon."
She also was not sending any kind of message by having the transgender character be a villain.
"We tried to be very clear that Charles comes from a very crazy family," King explained.
"Crazy runs in the family and it just so happens that this person, I think, suffered some tragic consequences of a crazy family, but having nothing to do with [being] transgender."
