Lady Gaga is raising eyebrows after encouraging questionable practices to push her new song "Applause" to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
Last week, the Mother Monster held a contest in which she urged fans to buy multiple digital copies of "Applause," with the chance to meet her.
Some of her more insane fans went to great lengths to win that honor, but the singer wasn't done there, continuing to push the video on YouTube.
Self-promotion is standard, but Gaga Tweeted a link allowing users to watch the "Applause" 150 times in a row, drawing the attention of Billboard.
Billboard's Bill Werde took issue with this seemingly cheap tactic to rack up BS video views, taking to Twitter to speak out against the practice:
"I just hate to see anyone try to game the charts, be it fans or artists," he wrote last night. "It's not in the spirit of what we do, celebrating success."
"An artist tweeting out and facebooking a link that enables a fan to hit play and leave their computer is not in the spirit of what we chart."
Werde then clarified his comments on the process, the singer and the controversy after Tweeting with fans, most of which he said were polite:
- It is fine to self-promote, send links to fans, etc. my objection is to playlisting.
- By "playlisting" I mean a link to "watch" the same video 150 times: roughly 9 straight hours of the same video.
- I've been/remain a fan of gaga's. I have previously tweeted my affinity for Applause. None of this has anything to do w chart integrity.
- Im not suggesting we'll discount credible views. I suspect (but wont know til AM) YouTube antispam tech will take care of playlisting.
- I believe in transparency & dialog. That's why I discuss here before all is neatly resolved. I learned a lot from y'all tonight. Thanks.
