Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the accused Boston Marathon bomber,has asked a judge to lift some of the restrictions on him in prison that he says are unfair.
Lawyers for Tsarnaev say the conditions he is being kept in are overly harsh, have left him nearly totally isolated, and are impairing their ability to defend him.
Tsarnaev's lawyers filed a motion claiming he is confined to his cell except for visits from them and has "very limited access" to a small outdoor enclosure.
In their motion, his team said "Special Administrative Measures" were imposed on their client beginning in August, at the request of the US Attorney's office.
"SAMs," as they are known, are used in terrorism and other high-profile cases involving "substantial risk" with a defendant's communications or contacts.
Without those measures enacted, officials allege that the accused's actions "could result in death or serious bodily injury" to others, even in custody.
The special restrictions were placed on shoe bomb suspect Richard Reid, "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh, and other terror suspects in recent years.
The measures restrict access to the mail, the media, the phone and visitors.
