Shots fired near Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., today prompted authorities to place the the U.S. Capitol on lockdown as officers swarmed the area.

"There are reports of injuries," said the Senate's Sergeant at Arms, while CNN quotes Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) reporting "one injury."
Members of Congress and staff members were told by police to "immediately shelter in place." The White House was also ordered locked down.
The shooting occurred at Maryland Avenue Northeast and Second street, two blocks from the capitol, which is in the midst of a government shutdown.
A suspect has been taken into custody.
In a notice distributed by email, the U.S. Capitol Police have advised everyone to "close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows."
The notice said gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill. CNN reports that U.S. Capitol Police have announced an "active shooter" situation.
People standing outside the Supreme Court across the street from Congress were hurried into the court building by authorities, according to reports.
