CVS to Cease All Tobacco Sales >>Hollywood

CVS is choosing health over profits.

Despite making $1.5 billion per year via tobacco sales, the chain announced today that it will take these products off the shelves at all of its 7,600 locations around the country by October 1.

"Selling tobacco is very inconsistent with being in that business," said CVS President Helena Foulkes,. "We really thought about this decision as it relates to the future as a health company - it's good for customers and our company, in the long run."

Foulkes added that she hopes CVS will eventually be viewed as an alternative to the doctor's office, considering its abundance of pharmacists and nurse practitioners on staff.

"Any form of tobacco use makes those chronic conditions more difficult to deal with," she said. "This is good for business and the right thing to do."

It's rare for a business to make such a move, of course, sacrificing a huge bottom line for the long-term well-being of its customer base.

But this isn't the first time CVS has taken a stand for what is believes to be right.

Last July, it famously refused to sell copies of the Boston Bomber Rolling Stone issue. It also heeded patron complaints and has promised to shorten receipts.

What do you think of CVS ending all tobacco sales?
