The first season of True Detective blew critics and audiences away with its surprisingly character-driven southern gothic murder investigation.
Unlike most shows on TV, however, the series features a one-and-done anthology format which means that acclaimed leads Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are out for season two, along with the rest of the first season's cast.
Rumors have been circulating since the True Detective finale back in January about who will replace the mismatched duo of Rust and Cohle, and now it seems we have half of our answer:
The Nerdist reports they've exclusively learned that Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain will star in True Detective season 2.
While neither side of the supposed deal has confirmed the casting choice, series creator Nic Pizzolatto previously stated that season 2 would feature a female-driven story and he's already proven his ability to draw A-list movie stars to the small screen.
Of course, even if the Chastain casting is verified, questions will still remain regarding who Chastain will be partnered with (if anyone) and where and when season 2 will take place.
Pizollatto has suggested in interviews that he may base the second installment of TD in Los Angeles and focus on the "secret occult history of the US transportation system."
Knowing Pizzolatto's flair for the mysterious, it's unlikely we'll learn much more between now and the second season premiere.
UPDATE: According to E! News, reps for Jessica Chastain have denied that she will star on True Detective. The mystery continues!
