More hopefuls take their place in front of the judges on American Idol Season 14 Episode 2. Nashville and Kansas City are the hot spots tonight as Keith, J.Lo, and Harry search for a star.
But given the...uh...success? of the past few winners, whether or not there's a star to be found remains to be seen. We can all rest assured, however, that each contestant who sings for a golden ticket believes their names will one day be in lights.
Andrew Annello, from Alabama, believes the judges are going to fall in love with his "positive personality." He definitely has a personality and it is a huge one. He auditions with "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" and definitely surprises me. He has a great tone. Keith thought it was a caricature. Harry called him silly and asked for something serious. He re-auditions with "My Girl," and gets a yes from Harry.
"I just want to feel it more," says Keith. "You'll feel it, baby. You'll feel it," replies Andrew.
Totally not awkward at all.
He gets a golden ticket and gets to introduce his mom to Harry and Keith. The apple didn't fall far from the tree when it comes to energy in that family.
Loren Lott, who is GORGEOUS, has wanted to audition for American Idol since she was 16. Singing "Treasure" by Bruno Mars. Either she's very karaoke or the piano accompaniment makes this sound like she's a lounge singer. She's an actress and Harry tells her she sounds like an actress who is singing for a role and Keith asks what song she'd sing if she were standing at the sink doing dishes.
They totally freak her out by carrying on conversations with one another about how J.Lo doesn't do dishes and she starts singing again. Keith gives her a yes. Harry gives her a no. J.Lo gives her a golden ticket.
16 year old Trevor Douglas is super excited to audition for American Idol and if singing doesn't work out, he wants to be the next Bill Nye. He channels his inner Ed Sheeran and sings "Sing." He rushes the song like CRAAAAAY and makes it through a verse and a chorus before they stop him. Then he gets the opportunity to crack some jokes with the judges and it's great. I love this kid!
He's going to Hollywood.
Piper Jones, a substitute teacher, rocks a Jessie J song for her audition. She has a Broadway quality to her that says maybe this isn't her final stop to stardom. She gets a yes.
Kelley Kime, 23, is a single mom to her daughter, Hope, whom she brings with her to the audition. Hope sings "Let It Go" and J.Lo cries. So do I. I can't help it, okay? They give her a golden ticket and it is the greatest moment in Idol history. Then her mom gets to sing "Sunday Morning" for the judges. There's a bluesy quality to her voice and it's really pretty. They let Hope give her mom the golden ticket.
Christina Perri's "I'm Only Human" plays in the background through a montage of people getting their dreams crushed. One guy looked like a tall Dominic Monaghan and all I could think was "It's not Penny's boat!"
Garrett Miles is blind and has been since birth. His parents encouraged him to sing when he showed a talent for it and he learned to play the guitar at 10. He makes "Proud Mary" his own by slowing it down a little and gets high praise from Keith and Harry. Then he sings "Como la Flor" for Jennifer. Keith walks a ticket over to him and gives Garrett a hug.
Clark Beckham is a street performer, a "busker," in Nashville. He honed his talent on the streets singing for passersby after following his dream to Nashville. He sings "It's A Man's World," and despite going what I thought was a little sharp, he got high praise from Harry and Jennifer (who heard the bum notes I did). Keith said he was a little too vocally controlled and wished he'd heard more intensity. He still gets through to Hollywood with a yes from Keith and J.Lo.
Gina Venier is a musician from Illinois whose dad taught her to play drums so she developed an act where she plays a kick drum box thing and has a shaker and she sings. And well. "Put The Gun Down" gets her three yes votes with zero critique!
Alex Shier traveled to Nashville from Michigan to audition. He definitely has he look! Luckily for him he has a voice to go with it. This is his second year auditioning and Jennifer remembers him from the first time around. He had never played a live show when he auditioned the first time and since then he's played over 200 shows. Keith and Jennifer give him a yes.
Cody Fry is 24 and a touring musician. He's been singing since basically birth. He plays guitar, piano, writes his own songs...he's a total package wrapped in a slightly Clay Aiken-ish body. Doesn't mean I don't instantly love his "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Because I do. Even if it does ZERO to make him relevant today and actually makes him seem a little more like a member of the Lollipop Guild.
He gets three yes votes and a golden ticket.
Trivia night fun fact: Keith Urban has one t-shirt in the Country Music Hall of Fame and it says "Sometimes people call me Maurice."
Hector Montengegro is a master cosmetologist from Florida with a ton of energy. He has a good voice, but his style is weird. He doesn't seem to have done a lot of performing and needs a LOT of refinement. And he'll get a crash course when he gets to Hollywood. California.
Four-time auditioner Sarina-Joi Crowe is back. While she's singing, Harry leans over to Jennifer and says "she's singing it better than the original." Harry skips the critique and jumps straight to the voting. They send her to Hollywood. Again.
Part of the fun of watching Idol is in watching the judges.
YESSS! Savion Wright is back! The judges cut him in the final round of Hollywood and asked him to come back and he did. He chooses "Change the World" by Eric Clapton for his audition. It's a great, confident audition. Keith gives him a yes. Jennifer does too. Harry doesn't even need to speak. He's going to Hollywood. Then he asks for critiques, which isn't something the other contestants who received no feedback did.
Thumbs up, Savion! And with that, we're done in Nashville.
The American Idol bus tour auditions are back in Kansas City. Singing "Grenade," Zack Kaltenbach, who is a KC native (and who went to David Cook's high school) kicks off the audition stop. He has a boy band quality to his voice but doesn't necessarily stand on his own. Harry called it a flat performance. Jennifer and Keith like his star quality but not his voice. She gives him a yes, Harry gives him a no. Keith gives him a yes.
Naomi Tatsuoka is a total character! Given the way she introduced herself, hopes were not high that she'd have anything but a laughable audition. Much to my surprise, and the judges, Naomi can sing. But she's a little dramatic. They send her to Hollywood.
Jhameel suffers from OCD and paints his face so that he can learn to love asymmetry. He slows down a T.Pain song and throws some acoustic flair at it. Jennifer dances along in her chair. She loves his style. Keith didn't think his voice was enough but loves that he's an entertainer. Harry thought he was able to convey emotion. They give him a golden ticket.
Jasmine Pinela believes she's the next American Idol. Hailing from Castle Hill, she sings "Listen" by Beyonce in an attempt to represent the place that gave life to Jenny from the Block. Unfortunately, she doesn't nail it. They stomp on her dreams and send her home.
Lovey James, real name Kirsten, is a former competitive dancer who has some original songs under her belt, complete with her own music videos. She chooses "Break Free" by Ariana Grande. She sounds like a mouse. They say she has a lot of originality. I disagree. She goes to Hollywood.
Jess Lamb is 28 and auditioning for American Idol for the first time. She's played all over, in studios, on stages, and finally feels ready to audition. She sits behind the piano, which is a first for Idol auditions, and sings "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" and Harry immediately starts smiling, calling her an interesting talent. She gets three yes votes and a golden ticket.
Then she gets to play piano with Harry Connick Jr. Her life was made even without the ticket. Harry busts out of the door behind her and her welcoming party looks suspiciously like American Idol Season 13 winner Caleb Johnson. It isn't. But it could've been.
The Kansas City auditions continue next Wednesday and we'll see at least one familiar face in the crowd. How many more dreams will come true? We'll find out next week.
