The family of Kathie McCormack believes that Robert Durst has been getting away with murder for over three decades. Now the subject of the explosive HBO documentary The Jinx may wind up paying the ultimate price for his crimes.
It was revealed yesterday that Durst will be charged with first-degree murder in the 2000 death of his friend Susan Berman. If convicted, he may face the death penalty.
Durst was arrested in New Orleans on March 14 just one day before the shocking conclusion of the docu-drama series that may have captured the evidence necessary to convict the elusive millionaire.
In the final installment of The Jinx, Durst - who is unaware that he is still wearing an active microphone - mumbles to himself that he "killed them all" just moments after an interview about his three alleged victims.
Police say that the timing of his arrest had nothing to do with The Jinx or the evidence it presented.
Durst's suspicious past began with the disappearance of his wife Kathie McCormack in 1982. He was never arrested despite a wealth of circumstantial evidence and some near-confessions from Durst himself.
Decades later, Berman - a crime writer and longtime friend of Durst's - was shot dead in her home just days before she was scheduled to speak with investigators.
After that shocking turn, Durst went into seclusion in Galveston, Texas, where he admittedly shot and killed his neighbor Morris Black during an argument.
Durst was acquitted on the grounds that he killed Black in self-defense.
While investigators say that Durst's possible-confession and the new evidence presented in The Jinx did not play a role in the decision to arrest the 71-year-old, portions of the documentary will likely be shown to jurors who will be tasked with deciding if Durst should die for his crimes.
