CBS' The Bold and the Beautiful introduced viewers to its first transgender character this week, a reveal that took the soap opera's fans by total surprise.

Maya Avant, who's been played by Karla Mosley for two years, was revealed to be transgender. She was assigned male at birth, and named Myron.
This reveal came courtesy of her sister, Nicole (Reign Edwards) in an emotional argument. "You're not my sister, Maya. You're not Maya at all," said Nicole.
"You're Myron, my brother."
Mosley, the 33-year-old actress, said she was as surprised as her character that this was the new direction of Maya's storyline. She recalls in an interview:
"My first reaction was surprise, Because 10 or 20 years ago, this is not a story we would be telling, and not in a way that's truthful and not sensational."
"My second reaction was, 'Thank you.' It's a gift. It's a privilege," she told USA Today. "It's a real opportunity to educate our viewers here and all over the world."
So why go there?
"It is about people respecting other people's differences and their uniqueness," said Bradley Bell, the executive producer and the head writer for B&B.
"It's about finding love in life. This is a love story. In the end, we all want to be loved, and in order to love someone else you first have to love yourself."
We'll have to see where he takes it from here, but the show-runner of the daytime drama concluded, "If you are transgender, gay, straight, it doesn't matter."
