Jack Nicholson is reportedly retiring from acting due to memory loss, insiders claim, though he has made no official announcement confirming this.

The Oscar-winning actor, 76, has quietly stepped away from the movie business. Says an alleged Nicholson source: "Jack has - without fanfare - retired."

"There is a simple reason behind his decision - it's memory loss," the source says.

"Quite frankly, at 76, Jack has short-term memory issues and can no longer remember the lines being asked of him. His memory isn't what it used to be."

He is said to have recently turned down the role of an aging alcoholic father in the upcoming film Nebraska that went instead fo Bruce Dern, 77.

The actor has not appeared in a movie since 2010's How Do You Know.

Retirement or not, the source says Jack, who is regularly seen courtside to watch his beloved L.A. Lakers play, will not be stepping out of the limelight.

"Jack has no intention of retiring from public life, at all. He just doesn't want a tribute. He's happy to tacitly join the retirees club like Sean Connery."

Jack Nicholson first burst onto the Hollywood scene in the 1950s, when he made his film debut in the low-budget teen drama The Cry Baby Killer.

But it was after he starred in Easy Rider alongside Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper that he really became recognized as one of the best of all time.

With twelve nominations (eight for Best Actor and four for Best Supporting Actor), Nicholson is the most nominated male actor in Academy Awards history.

Only Meryl Streep has more career nominations.

Jack's illustrious career has included three Academy Award wins, including for Best Actor in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and As Good as It Gets.
