Is this real life? Are we all on Family Guy? Are cartoon avatars the new Instagram?
Maybe.
The single-panel comic strips dominating your Facebook timeline (and the rest of everywhere else on the internet, too) are called Bitstrips, and they're easier than ever to create now that there's an app for that.
Bitstrips, which launched early this year, released the 1.1.7 version of its mobile app this week, and rallied to the top spot among free apps in both the App Store and Google Play with over 10 million users as of Thursday.
The app, which boasts more than 1,000 customizable templates with new ones added every day, allows users to fully comic-ize their lives for sharing, well, everything.
Shahan Panth, VP of marketing for Bitstrips, says that creators consider this "the next step in the evolution of social media." Bitstrips CEO Jacob Blackstock calls today's social media "frustratingly flat" and believes Bitstrips is the cure for what ails social sharing.
"Bitstrips," Blackstock says, is "a new way to express yourself and interact with your friends. Instead of posting the same things as everyone else, you can create something that relates to your life."
The Toronto-based company was bootstrapped and receives no external help or funding and very little in the way of advertising. They've launched an educational program for schools, Bitstrips for Schools, and have plans to bring Bitstrips characters to the real world with plush toys.
"The next big brand is you and your friends. You are the next superhero." Good thing I can rock a cape and tights, right?
What inquiring minds really want to know is whether they have plans to make the rampant sharing of food porn pictures more appetizing. (Or maybe that's just my mind. Seen one picture of someone's dessert on Facebook, you've seen them all, right?
Bitstrips comics have exploded virtually overnight. Some are boring. Some are humorous. Some are racy.
One thing's for sure, they're all fun.
