A Republican precinct official in North Carolina resigned from his position yesterday after The Daily Show aired a segment on the state's voter ID law.
Don Yelton quickly made national headlines for, among other things, criticizing the "lazy black people that wants the government to give them everything."
"When I was a young man you didn't call a black a black," Yelton added during the interview, which went viral for obvious reasons, "You called him a negro."
He also copped to loving portrayals of President Barach Obama as a witch doctor, while also evoking the "one of my best friends is black" defense.
Yelton has since stepped down from his position in the Buncombe County Republican Party, Buncombe GOP Chairman Henry Mitchell told WRAL.
In a press release, the Buncombe GOP called Yelton's comments "offensive, uniformed, and unacceptable of any member within the Republican Party."
Yelton "did not seek the approval of any party official before accepting the interview request" from Comedy Central, officials said, while Mitchell stated:
"Let me make it very clear, Mr. Yelton's comments do not reflect the belief or feelings of Buncombe republicans, nor do they mirror any core principle that our party is founded upon."
"This mentality will not be supported or propagated within our party."
The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit against North Carolina's controversial voter ID law in September, believing the law to be discriminatory.
